The Special Olympic Basketball Team headed to their state championship on March 6th; students and staff celebrated them before their departure in the Foyer.
According to Coach Tydra Davis, In order to qualify for state they had to win 2 games in January. Prior to that, they played 10 games against other teams including Glenbard North, St. Charles and Hinsdale South.
She also noted “At our Region Tournament, in the first game we played the Yorkville Foxes. In the second game, we played the Leyden Transition Team. During both games, our team worked hard to play defensively, score off of offensive rebounds and execute passes without interceptions.”
“One thing we were both proud of as coaches, was that every single player scored a basket during one of our games to qualify!” Ms. Davis said.
Player Jacob Reiche said he also enjoyed this experience: “Stealing the ball and making tons of baskets was amazing,” he said.
Assistant Director of Activities McLean and Coach Davis opened the celebration by stating the hard work and dedication each team member and coach put in to secure their success. The Cheer Squad and Marching Band performed the ‘Ram’s Fight Song’ as a tribute.
After the celebration they had a police escort around town that ended with parents and staff greeting them at door one. The actual state trip happened the following morning. Davis said “We lost both games down state, but our athletes played with so much heart and hustle. After the games, they enjoyed a dance and laser tag with other Special Olympic Athletes.”
